What do you do when God says no and you're left with a broken heart? Here are 5 helpful things to do trust God's love and plan for you.

It is my delight to introduce you to my friend, Deb.  She’s a woman whom I deeply respect for her knowledge of the Word of God. Every single post she writes is always filled with so much Godly wisdom.  She understands what it’s like to have lived in fear and now she lives in freedom and faith. She’s been a mentor to me along my fear-fighting path. I promise if you start to read her posts you will also be filled with the same encouragement. I had the joy of meeting her and loved her cheerful and joyful personality.

What are you and I supposed to do when we feel like God is the One who allowed a broken heart?

It’s your heart’s desire.

And the Bible says, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires.” Psalm 37:4

But for reasons beyond your ability to understand . . . God says ‘no.’

You’ve been good. You’ve tried to obey His commands. Maybe you’ve even dedicated your life to serving Him in ministry. But He still says ‘no.’

And all you can think is . . . it’s not fair!

If you’re like me (at least me before I learned it’s better, no it’s best, to trust God’s perfect love) you’ll start by praying over and over again.

Then you’ll whine and complain like a child trying to get a parent to soften and give in.

But it’s taking so long. You’re still sick. Still single. Still longing for a child, a job, a home, _________.

You look around and people who don’t even seem appreciative have that something you long for, and you find yourself giving in to jealousy, tantrums, and anger.

So now what?

This may be your story. It’s mine. I wanted what I wanted and God’s ‘no’ was simply unacceptable. Like a spoiled child I took things into my own hands refusing to wait on God’s will and timing.

So, let me share what I’ve learned is a better way.

What do you do when God says no and you're left with a broken heart? Here are 5 helpful things to do trust God's love and plan for you.

5 Helpful Things To Do When God Breaks Your Heart

1. Remember EVERYthing God allows is filtered through His love. Love is God’s character and He cannot do anything that is outside of who He is.

“Legalism says God will love us if we change. The gospel says God will change us because He loves us.” ~Tullian Tchividjian

2. Trust God’s goodness in EVERYthing He allows. His goal for you is your eternal good not our momentary happiness.

God’s love will come together with his faithful people. Goodness and peace will greet them with a kiss. Psalm 85:10

3. Know God sees the end from the beginning and may be protecting you. We make God too small. He is eternal, knows your past and your future, knows all the lives you will touch, and knows how best to bless you with eternity in mind.

God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? God arms me with strength, and He makes my way perfect. Psalm 18:30–31

4. Do what you are able and leave the rest to God. Get up and focus on what you are able to do today. Focus on what you have not what’s lacking. Embrace God’s plans and purposes which always include love . . . very big love.

“Harness the power of today. Seize the blessings of today! Make something happen, enhance your life, make someone laugh, help a friend, love, love, love!”  ~Steve Maraboli

5. Lean deep into God’s love through prayer and study of His Word. Carry His promises close and trust, trust, trust.

“Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. Faith is the belief that God will do what is right.” ~Max Lucado

I’m not going to tell you it will be easy. It won’t.

Luther speaks the challenge well:

“The sin underneath all our sins is to trust the lie of the serpent that we cannot trust the love and grace of Christ and must take matters into our own hands” ~Martin Luther

This isn’t fatalism. What I believe with all my heart through His lessons of grace . . . you can trust His perfect will and purposes for you because He is good and He loves. This is faith.
