When I was pregnant with my oldest two children I was not one to pray for my pregnancy or speak to them in them womb. I did not realize the importance of speaking or singing to the child. I did not put together that how I treated my body was how I was caring for my child. Nor did I know the child in my womb could hear the tone I would speak to people in and that it could either soothe or cause discomfort to their spirit.

At a young age I became a mother and was not serving God. My mind was wrapped around myself. I lived a day by day type of life.

I did not consider the generation I was about to raise or how I was an example to my children. I also did not realize children are a lot smarter than most of us want to believe.

That they truly do have gifts from the Lord the moment He creates them in the womb. Their purpose and plans becomes active when God places them in us.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13 NLT

When I remarried, my husband and I decided to have more children. We made the commitment to honor the Lord with the blessing He has given us to have more children.

Our greatest desire for our children was to feel the presence of the Lord early in age so they would know who God was. We also wanted their gifts to be known to us as parents at an early age so we could learn how to train them up in those gifts to use them for the glory of God.

A revelation the Lord gave me was that He knew all about our children before they were even a thought to us. He knew the child we were to conceive and the parents we were to become. He gave us a purpose and gifts to fulfill.

I wanted to take part in that with my children and honor God as a mother by partaking in raising my children to know who He is and that He created us.

I realized the best way to do this was to pray for them while I am pregnant with them. All though it’s never too late to start praying for our children, waiting to pray with and for them can prolong the success of overcoming some obstacles in our children’s lives.

When the Lord showed me this, my older children was seven and ten years old. They were already battling in areas that I now wished I had prayed for early on. Praying with them and for them is an honor and my privilege as their mother but there is a piece of me that burdens my heart that I did not know to pray for them early on.

As mothers, we need to realize, even though it’s never too late to pray, it's never too early to begin praying for our next generation. Click To Tweet

As I am now pregnant with our fifth child, I am reminded of the prayers I enjoy most while pregnant. These are areas that I have prayed over my two youngest children and prayers I now pray over all four of our children.

The topics I am about to share with you are ones that the Lord has touched me with and gave me insight to pray for. As a mother that know your children best and that is developing an intimate relationship with them, seek God and ask for His leading as you pray for the children He has blessed you with.

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.

And in Your book they all were written,

The days fashioned for me,

When as yet there were none of them.

Psalm 139:16 NKJV

Prayer Prompts

1. For Their Gifts.

I pray for their gifts to be seen at an early age. That me and my husband does not ignore them or put them to the side with thoughts that they are just children. May we see that we are blessed by the sight of our children having gifts for the glory of God. Our children’s gifts can be characteristics and passions such as: singing praises, praying with you when you pray, being compassionate for others, a willingness to help and serve others at a young age. All these characteristics and traits produce into areas of ministry.

2. For their health.

That each bone and joint is perfectly stitched together.  I am sure most of us pray for healthy children. I believe one of the deepest desire we have as a mother is to bore a child of perfect health. This is natural for us as mothers but what I had to learn through prayer is that God chose the child for me and who He creates is perfect.

I was personally convicted to change my prayers to: “Lord, I pray for a healthy child that is perfect in Your sight. That I see every bone and joint is perfectly stitched as You created it to be.” I pray this so my heart’s content even if it’s not everything I expect as perfect. I do not know what is considered perfect in His sight but He does and He knows how to use every situation for a testimony. I learned this through my time with my youngest son. In what was unexplainable to doctors with my sons inward body parts being disarrayed, is now used as a great testimony. You can read more about the story here.

3. For their love for Christ.

I can never make my children serve God but I can pray for their relationship with God. I can invest in pray for their future as a Christian by encouraging and speaking life to them. My husband and I can pray for direction from God of how to represent a godliness that will desire them to live a life with Christ. We are our children’s greatest examples from the moment we conceive them. They feel our heartbeats, they feel our peace, they hear our tongue, whether it brings life or death. Their love for Christ can be set as a standard by who we are in Christ.

4. For their relationships.

I find honor in being able to pray for their relationships for their future. That they will have friendships that is based off of Christ and they will represent a Christ like love to others in their life. I hope they will be the friend that they would want. I also have the honor to pray for their spouses and the next generation that they will help create one day.

5. For their desire to worship.

This is a big one for me. I love praying this prayer over my children starting from the womb. My desire is to one day witness all my children singing praises from their lips unto the Lord. I pray for days I will see my child kneeling before the Lord. I find comfort in knowing that the desires of my heart will prevail.

6. For them to have voices to sing.

Singing is something I wish I could do but unfortunately I definitely can not sing. Not being able to sing does not stop me from singing praises unto the Lord. It’s just done privately or when others are singing loudly around me so my voice can be drowned out. As I think of myself, I earnestly pray that my children will develop the passion to sing. May they do it ever so eloquently for the Lord.

7. For them to find comfort from me and their father.

When our child is born I hope for them to find us to be soothing. That when we lay them upon our chest they hear a heartbeat they recognize and desire to hear. Having our children find peace, rest, and comfort in us in times of need is a beautiful unity. It brings joy to me and my husband that our children find comfort in our presence, no matter their age or stage of life.

8. For my body to be healthy for them while in the womb.

I have had some tough pregnancies before. I have had times not knowing if my child will make it to the end of the pregnancy term. By praying over my body, I have found peace and comfort. Giving my body to the Lord and being obedient to His direction of how to care for my body has helped me become healthier during my pregnancy.

9. For their future.

Although the topic never changes, the subject is never the same. One day I may pray for their health for now and for it in their old age. Another day I may pray for the days of when they will eventually attend school and that they would develop a passion to learn. Other days I may pray about their walk with the Lord. Praying for the future is so wide range. There is so much area to cover when you pray for your child’s future. For myself to not get lost or overwhelmed with it all, I usually open my prayer for the Lord to direct my tongue in this area.

As you develop a relationship with your child in your womb, I pray that prayer becomes a natural habit for you. May it one day become part of your relationship with your children. I love watching my toddlers join me in prayer as I pray around my home. My heart melts as all my children will join me in prayer with others. That they do not walk away or  sit down but instead they join in and stand in agreement.
